Family pays tribute to 15-year-old 'hero' killed in stabbing attack

The family of a 15-year-old boy killed in a double stabbing attack have paid tribute to “our hero”.

Jakub Szymanski died in hospital from his injuries around an hour after emergency services were called to Miles Platting, Manchester, on Thursday evening.

Her mother – named locally as Katarzyna Bastek – was also treated for serious stab wounds at the Bednal Drive property. Ms Bastek, aged in her 40s, was taken to hospital and remains in stable condition.

It was reported that Jakub – who his family calls Kuba – was allegedly attacked while trying to protect his mother.

A 44-year-old man from Manchester, known to both victims, was arrested in Kent on Friday evening on suspicion of murder. Detectives continue to question him.

In a tribute, the teenager's family said: “Jakub was affectionately known as Kuba by his family and Jakub by his friends. He was always a popular kid who made friends wherever he went because of his friendly and talkative nature.

“He always said what he thought, he was mischievous, funny and cheeky. He loved his Xbox and football, supporting Manchester City.

“He was like any other teenager and he was helpful to so many people, even those he had just met. For our family, he is our hero.

Detective Chief Inspector Alicia Smith, from Greater Manchester Police's Major Incident Team, said: “We are continuing our investigation and last night's arrest was a huge step in potentially providing a grieving family the answers they so desperately need.
