Family of 16-year-old killed in Birmingham moped crash pay tribute to 'caring' teenager

The family of a 16-year-old boy who was killed after falling from a moped during an incident with a car in Birmingham say they are heartbroken by their loss.

Liam Mooney died in hospital on Tuesday after suffering serious head injuries in the incident the previous evening.

It is believed he was a passenger on a moped in Rocky Lane, Perry Barr, Birmingham, when he fell from the vehicle.

Police believe a silver car drove away after the incident – and they are now appealing for the driver to come forward.

“Liam was a teenager and should have had his life ahead of him,” said Detective Inspector Adam Jobson of West Midlands Police.

“This is a devastating time for his family and they need answers about what happened Monday night.

“We really need to talk to the driver of the car so he can tell us what happened and help us piece together all the circumstances.

“It is imperative that we hear their side of the story.”

In a statement released by police, Liam's family paid tribute to the teenager who they consider to be “a bit of a prankster” and who had a “brilliant sense of humour”.

“He was also very caring at times,” the statement continued. “He hadn’t been an uncle for a long time and loved his niece so much.

“We are heartbroken and never thought this would happen to us.

“Liam was not only loved by his mother, father, sisters and brothers, but also by his grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be greatly missed by everyone.

“Fly high our beautiful little angel. We love you so much, sleep well. We will all be together again one day.”
