F1 News: Nico Hulkenberg recounts horrific near-miss in Canada

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Haas F1 Team's Nico Hulkenberg made a frightening split-second decision that could have resulted in a disastrous collision. The incident occurred when VCARB's Yuki Tsunoda spun out of control on the slippery grass of Turn 8, directly into the path of Hulkenberg, who was hurtling down Turn 9. Miraculously, the vehicles missed each other by just millimeters.

Hülkenberg, reflecting on this heartbreaking event, shared his instinctive reaction. He explained to the media, quoted by Crash.net:

“I just don’t know…I tried to react, I tried to stop and I tried to avoid it.

“But it must have been a few millimeters – it was very, very close. So I closed my eyes, already bracing myself for the impact, but fortunately managed to escape it.

Despite the scare, the results for Haas were mixed. Hülkenberg, after regaining his composure, finished in 11th place, slightly ahead of his teammate Kevin Magnussen. Magnussen, who gained promising positions early in the race, finished 12th.

Speaking about his start to the race, Hülkenberg explained:

“The first 10 laps went very well. But then everything dried up and everything fell apart again. But yes, that was it.

“We knew this risk – not the risk, but this scenario. But a clean race, at least no mistakes.

Looking ahead, the Haas F1 team faces the need to closely analyze its strategy and performance. The Canadian Grand Prix serves as a crucial learning point for the team as it aims to refine its approach, increase its competitiveness and prepare for the challenges of future races.

The next race will take place from June 21 to 23 in Barcelona for the Spanish Grand Prix.
