Explosion and fire at Duke Energy substation

MAINEVILLE, OHIO (WXIX) — Multiple fire crews are on the scene of an explosion and large fire at a Duke Energy transformer station early Friday.

The incident occurred at the facility in the 8600 block of Butterworth Road in Maineville, Warren County dispatchers confirmed.

Butterworth Road is closed until further notice between Sibcy Road and Ascot Drive.

No injuries were reported, according to Hamilton Township Deputy Fire Chief Dan Berkebile.

“The substation is isolated hundreds of yards from homes,” he said in a phone interview with FOX19 NOW as he watched the facility burn. “They blew up a piece of equipment. It’s still on fire. There’s still power in there.”

A Duke Energy team is responding to the scene.

So far, no power outages have been reported, according to the company's website and the deputy fire chief.

“If there are prolonged power outages in the area, we will notify people,” he said.

FOX19 NOW has also reached out to a Duke Energy spokesperson and will update this story as soon as we hear back.
