Excessive heat increases fire risk this July 4 in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The Fresno Fire Department is planning a “very busy night” this July 4.

Last year alone, Fresno firefighters responded to more than 120 fires, including two structures, all caused by fireworks on the fourth.

Although they are a staple of many celebrations, fireworks of all kinds can be dangerous, authorities say.

“Never hold them in your hand, never point them at people, have a hose, a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby in case something goes wrong,” said Josh Sellers, public information officer for the Fresno Fire Department.

The Fresno Fire Department has a full staff and multiple dedicated engines to respond to incidents.

Fresno police will also be patrolling for illegal fireworks users.

Anyone found violating fireworks laws could face fines of up to $50,000 and years in prison.

With the current excessive heat and safety alerts in effect throughout the valley, officials say this creates another problem for this holiday. Not only in terms of increased fire risk, but also in terms of calls for heat-related injuries and the safety of firefighters when responding.

“The extreme dry conditions we are currently experiencing and the heat pose a real risk of fire that could be devastating,” Sellers said.

Last week, local fire departments demonstrated how quickly grass grows when fireworks are set off nearby, in an effort to urge families to be extra vigilant.

“I don't know if there's a way to stay completely safe, but just light them up, run back and let the fireworks do their thing. On the street, of course, and we don't have any dry grass around us anyway, which is also a good thing,” said Fresno resident George Duran.

And don't forget the food! If you're planning a family barbecue, officials are reminding everyone to stay away from anything that could easily catch fire.

Fresno police are urging anyone who sees illegal fireworks in their neighborhood to call their non-emergency line at (559)-621-7000.
