Ex-cop sentenced to 1 year in prison for forcing man to lick urine in his cell

A former Mississippi police officer who admitted to forcing a man in custody to “lick” his own urine off the floor of his cell has been sentenced to a year in federal prison.

Three months after Michael Christian Green, 26, pleaded guilty to acting under color of law to deprive a person of their civil rights, the ex-cop has now been sentenced to 12 months in prison, according to a news release the United States. U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Mississippi.

His prison stay will be followed by another year of supervised release and fines, CNN reported.

“The City of Pearl, while not the sentencing agency in this case, is pleased that this part of our recent history is behind us,” the city told the news outlet in a statement.

“Michael Green's actions were reprehensible and inexcusable, and we were deeply saddened to have been associated with this incident. We hope this sentence can help the victim and her family in their healing process, and we are grateful to our federal partners who helped bring this terrible incident to justice quickly,” the statement continued.

Green is now scheduled to report to the Federal Bureau of Prisons on July 26, according to CNN.

Green's attorney, Bradley Alan Oberhousen, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Saturday.

Green's actions were previously captured on security footage Dec. 23 in the Pearl Police Department's holding cell.

Federal court documents obtained by PEOPLE indicate Green responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a local Sam's Club, before arresting and transferring a man to the police department — where he defecated in a holding cell after officers ignored his request to use a break room.

After taking the man into custody, Green ordered him to “go fuck himself right now,” according to allegations made in court documents by U.S. Attorney Todd W. Geen.

“See this phone? I'll beat you with it. You're going to go there, and you're going to lick that shit. Do you understand me,” the officer allegedly asked the man, according to the documents.

He then took out his mobile phone to film the ordeal, while demanding that the man “don’t spit it out”. The man then “repeatedly vomited” into a trash can, court documents add.

“Green had no governmental interest or law enforcement purpose in ordering BE to lick his urine,” the U.S. attorney wrote in the criminal information, arguing that the officer “intentionally deprived” him of man of his constitutional right “not to be deprived of his liberty without due process of law, which includes the right of a person in pre-trial detention to be released from conditions of detention amounting to punishment.

Green joined the Pearl Police Department in June 2023 and resigned Dec. 27 following an internal investigation, city spokesperson Thérèse Apel previously told PEOPLE.
