Everything we know about the man with a sword arrested and five in hospital

A 14-year-old boy was killed and four others were hospitalised on Tuesday morning after a sword-wielding man launched an attack near a north-east London tube station, police said.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 7am after reports that a car had driven into a house and several people had been stabbed near Hainault train station.

Police say the suspect then attacked other members of the public and two police officers. Four people are still hospitalized, their days are not life-threatening. The two officers will require surgery, the Metropolitan Police said.

Footage showed a man armed with a knife while another man described how the suspect was involved in a confrontation with police in an alleyway in the Thurlow Gardens area.

A 36-year-old man was arrested and police said they were not looking for other suspects.

How did the incident happen?

The Metropolitan Police said officers were initially called to reports of a vehicle crashing into a house just before 7am.

Police said people were stabbed during the incident and the suspect then attacked other members of the public and two police officers.

A witness to the incident in Hainaut said he heard screams around 7am before seeing a man jump over fences.

Another man told how a suspect got into a confrontation with police in an alleyway in the Thurlow Gardens area, before hearing a “huge commotion” and a woman screaming.

The man, who asked to remain anonymous, told the PA news agency he saw a man jump over fences from his back window and heard someone shout “he's got a huge knife”.

How did the emergency services react?

The Metropolitan Police, London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade all rushed to the scene on Tuesday morning.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man while five people were rushed to hospital. A 14-year-old boy who was taken to hospital after being stabbed and died shortly after.

“The events of this morning are truly horrific and I can't even imagine what those affected must be feeling,” Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell told reporters in Hainault.

“My thoughts are with the injured, their families and the community at large as we all begin to come to terms with what has happened and try to understand what has happened here.

“I know there will be – clearly and understandably – a desire for answers and explanations. Our investigation is in its early stages and my agents are currently working to establish all the facts as a priority. We will share what we can with the wider community as soon as we can. »

A LAS spokesperson said they were called at 6.54am this morning to report the incident.

They sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, clinicians in response cars, advanced paramedics and the London Air Ambulance.

A spokesperson said: “Working with our emergency service partners, we treated five people at the scene and took all five to hospital. »

London Fire Brigade said it had been called to the incident. A spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to assist police and London Ambulance Service colleagues at an incident near Hainault tube station.

“Crews supported London Ambulance Service teams in providing immediate emergency care.”

Was the incident linked to terrorism?

The Metropolitan Police said the incident does not appear to be terrorism-related.
