Euro 2024: Spanish teenager Lamine Yamal passes his school exams

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal celebrates ahead of Spain's Euro 2024 round of 16 tie against Georgia on Sunday after passing his school exams.

The 16-year-old received the good news at Spain's training camp in southern Germany, where he is combining his studies with representing his country at the tournament.

“I just came out of training and I was told that everything went well,” Yamal told Spanish radio Onda Cero. “I passed the exams and now I have the ESO qualification.

“If I'm honest, I saw them on my phone and it said I was successful, so I just closed the app, called my mom and told her.”

The results correspond to the fourth year of ESO, which is the final cycle of secondary education in Spain, roughly equivalent to GCSE exams in the UK or the high school diploma in the US.

Yamal, who turns 17 the day before the Euro 2024 final, revealed earlier in the tournament that he had brought his homework with him to the Euros.

“No,” he replied with a laugh in an interview with COPE when asked if his teammates made sure he kept up with his schoolwork. “I study alone, but they make jokes like 'Go study now…'

“We have a lot of free time and when I'm in my room doing nothing, I take the iPad and do some homework. And when Nico [Williams] and Fermin [López] Call me to play Playstation, I'll go down with them.”

Yamal became the youngest player to appear at the European Championship in Spain's opening match against Croatia at the age of 16 years and 338 days.

He has played in all three of Spain's matches in the tournament so far, helping Spain advance to the round of 16 as the only team with a 100% winning record. The Spaniards will meet Georgia in Cologne for a place in the quarter-finals this weekend.

In total, he won 10 caps for his country, scoring two goals and providing five assists in those appearances.

The teenager is also already a regular at his club, Barça. He made 50 appearances for the Catalan team last season in all competitions.
