TOPEKA (KSNT) – An Emporia State University football player is suspended indefinitely after being arrested in connection with an alleged burglary of an Emporia apartment while a family was inside.

Michael Hourel, 19, a linebacker at ESU, joined the Hornets as part of the January 2024 recruiting class. An Emporia State Athletics spokesperson told 27 News that due to the arrest, Hourel is suspended indefinitely.

This suspension means a ban from participating in any intercollegiate athletic activity at ESU.

We are aware of the situation and are waiting for the police procedure to take its course. We have no further comment to make at this time.

Statement from Donald Weast, ESU Deputy Director and Media Relations

According to Emporia police, an officer responded to an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Merchant Street.

A woman told police she woke up to find a stranger inside the apartment. The man allegedly pushed her against the wall and tried to cover her mouth. The report states the woman was still able to scream, which alerted her husband and two children. On Sunday, June 30, Hourel was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and aggravated assault.
