“The decision to suspend a search is always difficult and weighs heavily on everyone involved,” said Capt. Jonathan Andrechik, commander of Coast Guard Sector New York. “Our teams, along with our partner agencies, have carried out an exhaustive search and our thoughts remain with the families during this difficult time.”

Search teams have been looking for the two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, since Friday evening. Authorities said the two teens attempted to surf a large wave and never resurfaced.

On Friday, dozens of first responders, large numbers of fire trucks and ambulances flooded the waters of the beach. Officials said lifeguards were on duty until 6 p.m. Red flags indicated that swimming was prohibited due to strong currents. NYPD divers were pulled from the waters by nightfall.

Teams searched more than 600 square miles from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Long Beach, New York, authorities said.
