Elkins Fire Captain Retires, Honored for More Than 34 Years of Service

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WDTV) – Captain Ronald Corcoran retired this week after more than 34 years of service to the City of Elkins.

A celebration was held in his honor at the Elkins Fire Department to honor a man who was a cornerstone of the community, city officials said.

Corcoran received a special plaque and trophy in recognition of his service. Friends, family and colleagues gathered to share memories, celebrate and reminisce about Corcoran's time in the city.

Throughout the event, several city officials gave speeches praising Corcoran.

“I had the privilege of working with Ron for almost 22 years. Ron is the longest-serving current city employee with 34 1/2 years of service,” said Elkins Fire Chief Steve Himes. “He worked for 4 1/2 years in the sanitation department and spent the last 30 years with the fire department. During this time he worked for 7 mayors and 7 fire chiefs.

“Ron has, above all, been a friend to all of us,” Himes continued. “He goes out of his way to help others. He can build a roof, deliver an appliance, pour concrete or go hunting and fishing. He is also a teacher. He taught many of us who came through the doors how to do this work. Besides that, one can learn a lot from Ron in other ways. If you think you want to learn how to be a good person, a helpful neighbor, or a great father; Look no further.”

Mayor Jerry Marco of the City of Elkins also thanked Corcoran for his service to the city.
