Electrical fire damages Centralia home

An electrical fire caused minor fire but significant smoke damage to part of a home occupied by Sharon Bierman at 418 South Maple Street in Centralia early Friday evening.

Centralia city firefighters said smoke was coming from windows and second story windows when they arrived on scene. After entering the house, a small fire was discovered at the top of the stairs, apparently started by an extension cord. It was quickly extinguished and the attic was checked to make sure it had not spread. There was significant smoke damage to the second floor of the home and moderate smoke damage to the first floor.

A dog was found out of breath on the second floor. He was taken downstairs where an attempt at cardiopulmonary resuscitation was made, but the dog could not be revived.

Bierman smelled smoke while on the first floor of the home and called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the stairs.

All available city firefighters were called to the scene. The Centralia Fire Protection District was called for mutual aid to the scene and Odin stood by at the Centralia Fire Station in case of another fire.

Jennifer Heinrichsmeyer of Centralia owns the home.

The call to the fire department came in at 6:18 p.m. Friday evening. Firefighters remained on scene until 8 p.m.
