Elderly woman and dog die after Fairfield house fire; 2 others displaced

An elderly woman and a dog died in a fire at a Fairfield home early Friday and two family members were displaced, officials said. The Fairfield Fire Department said the fire was reported at 1:14 a.m. in the 200 block of Stephen Street. There was a “widespread fire” at the rear of the single-story home that was quickly extinguished. There was heavy smoke emitting from the front door when crews arrived, firefighters said. An elderly woman who was believed to have been trapped in a back bedroom died at the scene, the Fairfield Fire Department said. The dog was also recovered from the home. The family's two other residents and a cat that escaped the fire were unhurt. The fire appears to have been accidental but remains under investigation, firefighters said. Damage is estimated at $250,000. The Red Cross is helping the two displaced people. “Our sincere condolences go out to the victim and his family,” Fairfield Fire Chief John Sturdee said in a statement.
