Man charged in Monticello Fareway shooting death pleads guilty, gets life sentence

On Tuesday, a judge convicted the man accused of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Monticello Fareway employee, KCRG reports. On November 7, 2023, Aaron McAtee, 48, was outside the store when he was shot by Nathan Russell, and later died at a nearby hospital. Russell left before authorities found him in Hopkinton a short time later. A Delaware County deputy shot Russell when he did not comply with orders. Russell pleaded guilty to first-degree murder during the plea hearing. He will also have to pay restitution to the victim's family as part of the agreement. McAtee's family members sent letters and spoke in person in court, expressing both their grief over the loss of Aaron and their frustration with Russell's actions. Through his attorney, Russell acknowledged that his actions caused harm to the victim's friends and family and accepted his punishment.
