E-rickshaw driver arrested for 'sexually assaulting' teenager in Delhi | Delhi News

A 27-year-old e-rickshaw driver was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenager who was boarding his vehicle in north Delhi, police said.

DCP (North) Manoj Meena said that on June 13, information was received from Bara Hindu Rao Hospital that a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted. The call was made to sub-inspector Mithilesh to take necessary action. The girl's statement was recorded and a medical examination was conducted. The police registered a case under sections of the POCSO Act and started searching for the driver of the e-rickshaw.

The DCP said there was no number plate on the e-rickshaw. “The incident occurred at around 2.30am, making it difficult to identify the vehicle or the accused from the CCTV footage. More than 150 cameras located at various locations, such as New Delhi railway station, were checked and the images analyzed. We pieced together a trail from the crime scene to Mori Gate, where he was last spotted,” he said.

Another officer said the accused was eventually identified based on the make and color of his e-rickshaw. “On June 15, the accused, Mohd. Istikhar was apprehended from Mori Gate. The girl said she hit the accused with a brick. This helped us confirm his identity as Istikhar sported a new injury mark on his forehead.

During interrogation, police said, Istikhar told them that the girl had boarded his e-rickshaw near the ISBT Kashmere gate, but he had taken her to a forested area and had her sexually assaulted. “He said the injuries on his forehead and eyes were caused when the girl resisted and hit him with a brick,” DCP Meena added.
