DVIDS – News – US Coast Guard rescues disabled vessel near Galves Banks

SANTA RITA, Guam — The U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued a disabled vessel, Uchan, and its crew approximately 25 miles off the coast of Galves Banks on June 13, 2024.

The operation involved a coordinated effort by the Joint Rescue Subcenter (JRSC) Guam and the 45-foot Medium Response Boat from U.S. Coast Guard Station Apra Harbor.

JRSC observers received a distress call via VHF CH 16 from the operator of the 19-foot vessel, Uchan, which reportedly had three people on board and was adrift due to engine problems. The JRSC Guam team immediately issued an Urgent Maritime Information Broadcast (UMIB) informing Sailors in the area of the situation and assumed the role of Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator (SMC) under the direction of Cmdr . Ryan Crose, deputy sector commander.

Observers directed the launch of the response team, which arrived on scene and assessed that the engine failure was due to water contamination in the fuel line and tank. The vessel was placed under tow astern and began the return journey to Malesso Pier, with an estimated arrival time of 3.5 hours. During the operation, Petty Officer 3rd Class Alexandra Avalos, boatswain and coxswain, was at the helm and performed her first SAR tow perfectly.

“This mission demonstrated how dedicated and adaptable our team is,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Alexandra Avalos. “Our crew did an incredible job, and I have to thank the sailors for being proactive and using a marine radio to call for help. Having the right equipment on site makes all the difference.”

The evolution lasted nine hours, with a five-hour tow to return to safety. All sailors on board Uchan arrived safely at the dock and were unhurt.
