Dumfries teenager chosen to represent Scotland at European Youth Table Tennis Championships

A teenager from Dumfries has been chosen to represent Scotland at the European Junior Table Tennis Championships in Sweden in July.

Shannon Brown will travel to Malmö alongside teammates Megan Mulhern and Amelia Smolarek from Drumchapel TTC.

The eighteen year old is an accomplished player, with a good track record of representing Scotland, Scottish schools and Dumfries Table Tennis Club. She took up table tennis at the age of eight, following in the footsteps of her mother Norma, who represented Scottish schools at the British Home Internationals several times. Norma is also a loyal member of the Dumfries club.

Shannon's interest and commitment was evident from a young age. She represented Scotland at two British Primary Schools Championships and four British Secondary Schools Championships. His record also includes a home nations championship and a European Youth Championship.

In 2022, she represented the prestigious Drumchapel TTC in the Junior British League, where her team finished second in Division Four, gaining promotion to Division Three for the following season. Unfortunately, her progress was hampered at that time by injury and she was forced to spend time on the sidelines.

Shannon then got to work with the club's young players, providing them with coaching and advice. At the same time, she embarked on a physiotherapy program to help her recovery. After about a year, she began a cautious return to sport and is now in great shape. She hopes to be part of the JBL Drumchapel team again for the 2024/25 season.

Shannon is currently Scotland's second-ranked junior girl and the club's undisputed best junior in both the mixed and women's categories. Unfortunately, she was unable to compete in the Club Championship Open, either the Ladies' Singles or the Open Doubles, due to other commitments that day. This season, she added the title of best individual in the first division to her list of achievements. Always busy, she combines all her table tennis practice and competitive activities with employment at Let's Get Sporty and Active schools, and also takes a weekly football lesson at New Abbey.

The club would like to thank junior sponsor, Fusion Renewables, for their support.
