Dublin student Jerome dies after crash in Powell

According to the Powell Police Department, the accident happened Monday around 9:15 p.m. in the 3400 block of Club Way Court in Powell Grand Communities.

POWELL, Ohio — A 16-year-old Dublin Jerome High School student died Monday evening after an accident at a Powell apartment complex. The driver, also 16 years old, faces several charges in connection with the accident.

According to the Powell Police Department, the crash happened in the 3400 block of Club Way Court in Powell Grand Communities around 9:15 p.m.

One person, Ethan Blecke, was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead a few hours later. Police Chief Ron Sallows said another person was hospitalized and is now considered stable. Three other people were treated at the scene.

Sallows said it appears a 16-year-old boy was driving a Tesla, with five other people inside the vehicle, at a high rate of speed when he hit a speed bump, lost control and crashed. hit several other vehicles. The Tesla also hit part of a garage attached to one of the apartment buildings.

Two of the six people were in the trunk of the Tesla at the time of the accident. Police have not said whether Blecke, a passenger in the vehicle, was one of those two people. No one inside the apartment was injured.

Mike Aurin, Dublin Jerome's principal, confirmed Blecke was a student at the school.

Aurin said there is a crisis intervention team of trained professionals for students and staff during this difficult time. Advisors will also be available Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

“Our sincere condolences and prayers go out to Ethan’s family, his friends and all other members of our community who knew and loved Ethan,” Aurin wrote in a statement to the Dublin Jerome Community.

Charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and reckless driving have been filed against the teen driver.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
