Drivers jailed, cars seized after alleged road race

EAGLE MOUNTAIN — A deputy stopped two drivers allegedly going 84 mph in a 40 mph zone amid concerns the situation could escalate into a road rage incident Tuesday night.

According to the police statement, Daniel Julian Salomone and Jose M. Laboriel Turcios, 23, were driving southbound on Pony Express Parkway at an “extremely high rate of speed.”

A Utah County sheriff's deputy reported that his radar detected the two drivers going 84 mph in a 40 mph zone during rush hour.

Due to the high speed, the affidavit says the deputy activated his emergency lights and began pursuing the two drivers in an attempt to stop them.

According to the affidavit, the officer conducted a traffic stop because the two drivers stopped at a red light. The officer said they were able to get in front of their cars and order both drivers to pull over to the side of the road.

The affidavit said Salomone and Turcios were “engaged in a speed competition” against each other and that they were both driving recklessly with “a clear, willful or reckless disregard for others.”

Both drivers were booked into the Utah County Jail on charges of reckless driving and speeding on a highway. The sheriff's office also impounded the drivers' vehicles.
