Driver killed in collision between car and sheriff's SUV in Apple Valley

A man died in a crash between his car and a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department SUV at an Apple Valley intersection, local authorities said.

The fatal crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday at Bear Valley and Kiowa roads, according to San Bernardino County Fire Protection District logs.

A deputy was responding to a “priority call,” Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez said, when the vehicle collided with a Toyota Corolla near the intersection.

The driver of the Toyota was the only occupant and died at the scene, according to Rodriguez. The deputy was treated for minor injuries, she added.

Both vehicles suffered significant front-end damage, according to video footage from the scene.

It was not immediately clear whether the deputy was driving with his emergency lights and sirens activated at the time of the crash.

No further details were available as the investigation was still in its early stages Saturday afternoon.

The intersection was expected to remain closed until late in the evening while authorities conducted an investigation.
