Driver identified in fatal I-20 crash after running out of gas

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified a man who ran out of gas on I-20 and was struck by a tractor-trailer early Saturday morning.

Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 5:20 a.m. near mile marker 79, about a mile from Clemson Road. Miller said a 2014 GMC Sierra was stopped on I-20 eastbound on the highway after running out of gas. Miller said the driver exited the vehicle, at which point a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer struck him and their truck.

On Sunday, the Richland County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Christopher D. Hagan, 38, of Lancaster.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.
