Armed police officers became locked in a six-hour standoff in a quiet market town following reports of an armed man.

Neighbors were urged to stay indoors as dozens of officers, many wearing masks and carrying weapons, descended on the cul-de-sac in Stanningley, near Leeds.

Ambulance crews and trained negotiators are also on scene to try to reach a “safe conclusion”.

Police were initially called to a domestic incident at a house on a quiet street, but quickly left after a man at the address was apparently in possession of a weapon.

A cordon has been put in place and various emergency services resources, including police negotiators, are on scene to try to bring the incident to a conclusion.

A cordon has been established around a house where a man is believed to have brandished a handgun in a Leeds market town.

Police have confirmed the man is the only person in the house and poses no risk to the wider community.

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a man hanging from an upstairs window of the home and drones were seen flying overhead.

A resident who lives nearby told Leeds Live: “They've just said it's an incident and they won't say anything else.”

Another added: “I've never seen anything like this before.
