Downtown shooting suspects in court

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — The four suspects arrested for their alleged roles in a 5th Street party shooting in late April appeared in court for their arraignment Monday, July 1.

Among those at the party were many University of Arizona students. Erin Jones, a sophomore at the University of Arizona, was killed in the shooting. Police say the teens were targeting another group of people at the party and Jones was caught in the crossfire.

Three 17-year-olds, Tevion Beale, Marcus Williams and Akeem Alvarez, are suspected of shooting at partygoers. Estevan Garcia, 18, who also appeared in court, told police he was the driver.

The teenagers appeared in court virtually from prison. They pleaded “not guilty.”

The judge set a case management conference for July 31. By that time, it may be clearer whether the case is moving toward a plea deal or a trial.

Tulsa police paint a cold portrait of the defendants on the night of the shooting.

A preliminary complaint states that Garcia drove past the house several times and turned around, allowing the other three to then shoot into the party.

The teens then parked on the street and drove to “several other locations” looking for people to shoot.

The preliminary complaint was expunged. It remains unclear who the teens targeted and why.

Tulsa police say the investigation is still open.
