Downtown Madison shooting under investigation – The Badger Herald

A shooting occurred at the Lux Apartment building at 433 W Johnson St. around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a Madison Police Department. incident report.

At least 10 people, aged 14 to 23, were injured, but not all by gunfire. Some are seeking treatment at local hospitals, but none of the injuries are life-threatening. At least one victim was still in the hospital as of 4 p.m. Sunday.

This is an active investigation by the MPD Violent Crimes Unit and no arrests have been made. Detectives returned to the scene to search for more evidence and video footage later Sunday.

Officers were responding to a disturbance on the roof of the building when they were alerted to shots fired. Dozens of people were fleeing the building when police arrived.

BadgerSafe alerts began at 1 a.m., warning students to avoid the area. The alerts continued until 4:21 a.m., when students were advised to exercise caution and monitor local media for updates.

MPD closed Johnson Street and the surrounding area to investigate the incident early Sunday.

The University of Wisconsin has published a statement offer resources for those involved in or affected by the incident, although no injured people appear to be affiliated with the UW.

MPD Chief Barnes will hold a press briefing at 9 a.m. Monday.
