Downbeach Express near Atlantic City claims it double-charged its drivers

One of the nation's few privately owned toll bridges told motorists heading to the beach in New Jersey that it recently mistakenly charged them twice.

The Downbeach Express, owned by Ole Hansen and Sons, runs from Northfield to Margate City, near Atlantic City.

On Wednesday, the company said the company it uses to process credit cards “encountered a technical issue that resulted in duplicate charges for some of our customers.”

The apology notice, posted on its website, said the problem occurred on June 27, with “some of our customers” being charged twice.

The bridge does not accept EZ-Passes. Regular users can sign up for an Express Pass which allows them to benefit from reduced toll rates deducted from a prepaid card.

The statement did not specify whether the erroneous charges affected pass holders, drivers who pay with a credit card at toll booths, or both.

The bridge's owners are very secretive about its operation, and the number of crossings is difficult to determine. But the bridge remains very busy for getting to and from Absecon Island, despite a free crossing at nearby Longport.

Margate, home of Lucy the elephant, offers quick access to Ventnor and Atlantic City.

Downbeach Express said users would be refunded within 48 hours.
