Domestic violence advocates respond to deadly Indianapolis shooting

Advocates say domestic violence-related homicides have declined since 2021, but they continue to see guns in the hands of abusers.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is still investigating a deadly shooting early Saturday morning in northwest Indy. Police told 13News it was the result of a domestic dispute.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., police responded to the 3000 block of Armory Drive, near West 30th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, for a report of a person shot .

When first responders arrived, they found a woman who had been shot and pronounced her dead at the scene.

An IMPD spokesperson said police found a firearm inside the residence and a man was arrested for his involvement in the incident. Investigators believe the victim and the man were the parents of a baby who was there at the time of the shooting.

“This child will never know his mother and his father was stripped naked as well,” said IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson.

Investigators believe it started with a domestic disturbance.

Danyette Smith with the Indy Public Safety Foundation told 13News domestic violence-related homicides have decreased since 2021, but they continue to see guns in the hands of abusers.

“If we could just continue to take guns out of the hands of abusers and out of the homes where the abuse is taking place, then we will have a better chance of reducing the number of homicides,” Smith said.

Smith said that while every situation is different, domestic violence prevention groups will continue to be present and intervene.

“Domestic violence is unfortunately unpredictable in households and we just don't know if a homicide is going to occur, but we do know that there is an increased risk when guns are in the home,” Smith said.
