“Difficult to understand”

The mother of missing teenager Jay Slater has provided an update on her son, who has been missing for 11 days.

Debbie Duncan, who is currently in Tenerife helping to search for the 19-year-old, posted the update on a fundraising page set up to find the missing boy, which has raised more than £35,000 in donations .


Writing on the GoFundMe page today, Duncan informed the public of his intention to “withdraw a portion of the funds (£36,250)”.

She wrote: “First of all, I would like to thank everyone for your support, kind messages and well wishes.

“It’s hard to understand what’s happening right now, but we’re not giving up hope that we’ll find Jay and come home together.”

“We are currently working with GoFundMe to withdraw a portion of the funds, which are being held securely.

“I wanted to share that these funds will go towards supporting the mountain rescue teams who are tirelessly searching for Jay.

“Additionally, as our stay in Tenerife is to be extended, we will also use the funds to cover accommodation and food costs.

Slater flew from Lancashire to the Canary Islands for a music festival, but disappeared after going to the house of people he had met at a night out on June 16.

During his last call to his friend Lucy Law at 8 a.m. local time last Monday, the 19-year-old said his phone had only one percent battery, he was thirsty and that he didn't know where he was.

His last location indicated that he was in the Teno Rural Park, an area popular with hikers. He has not been seen since and the search is in its eleventh day.

After his disappearance, internet trolls created fake GoFundMe pages in Slater's name, with his family coming forward to beg people not to donate to them. The seven fake pages have since been deleted.

Since then, a frenzy of wild claims has been made on social media, vile messages have been sent to his mother and friends have even claimed that Slater's Instagram account had been hacked.

Lamenting the reaction, Rachel Hargreaves, a friend of Slater's currently in Tenerife, wrote on Facebook: “All the groups are full of trolls and sick people.

“I can't believe that some people are so sick in the head, that there are people hacking my accounts and that Jay's family is telling pure lies and pretending that we are all in on it,” he said. she declared.

“Jay is missing and it’s absolutely soul destroying.”
