Brian Monahan, Team 2 Severe Weather Meteorologist confirmed with the U.S. Geological Survey that a magnitude 2.5 earthquake was recorded at 11:15 p.m. near Buford.

Most earthquakes below magnitude 3.0 are usually not felt. Monahan said this one was a bit unusual though because it was so shallow. The epicenter of the earthquake was just 4 km below the surface. Shallow earthquakes, even small ones, are more likely to cause shaking.

The USGS also reported a second, smaller earthquake at 1:30 a.m. centered in Gwinnett County. This one had a magnitude of 2.1 and a depth of 5.3 miles.
