Did the TikTok challenge filming in Sacramento's Meadowview neighborhood go wrong?

The search for a suspect is underway after five people, including a teenager, were shot Monday outside a south Sacramento apartment complex. Everyone is expected to survive.

It happened outside an apartment complex along Coral Gables Court in the Meadowview neighborhood. Residents in that area told CBS13 this didn't come as a shock, with many feeling numb to this type of violence.

“To be honest, no one is afraid,” said Mac Milo, whose family lives nearby.

Milo believes those involved didn't think through the consequences before pulling the trigger.

“It’s like any other place in America,” he said. “It’s the ghetto.”

Several neighbors said a fight broke out after a group of children were playing with water pellet guns, better known as Orbeez guns. It's a trend that has taken TikTok by storm few years ago.

“If we allow our kids to have this kind of fun and we don't impose parameters, it could become deadly,” said Berry Accius, community advocate and founder of Voice of Youth.

Neighbors said it escalated from fun to fighting and actual gunfire.

“My mother was hit. My niece was hit,” said Veronica Broadway, who shared her concerns in the aftermath of the shooting with CBS13.

Broadway spoke to CBS13 Tuesday night and said the fight got serious very quickly.

“It got a little rough. They're teenagers. They're always fighting here. There was no reason for a man to bring a gun,” she said.

The Sacramento Police Department said it couldn't confirm anything that Broadway or others claimed to have seen, but a neighbor showed us the Orbeez shell casings not far from the crime scene. There were orange remains that looked like water balloons.

“We’ve seen this before,” Accius said. “What are we going to do differently in the future?”

Accius said prevention starts with programs to keep children occupied. That's why he actively shows kids in neighborhoods like this the future they can have by taking them on college tours or teaching them new skills.

He said such things are crucial now because there is sometimes a slight increase in crime during the summer months among young people because they are not busy in school.

“Some of the most innocent things turn violent and aggressive and deadly, and this could have been one of those times,” Accius said.

Police could not give any description of a suspect or suspects, but said they were reviewing surveillance video from Monday evening.

Tuesday evening, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department told CBS13 they are asking anyone with information to report it to (916) 808-5471 or they can submit tips anonymously through the P3tips application.
