Experts said two types of weapons were used. One type of weapon identified is an American-made M4 rifle, as evidenced by empty brass cartridges found at the site. Additionally, shorter cartridges were also discovered among the debris. These cartridges came from the AK-47 assault rifle, measuring 7.62 x 39 mm.

New Delhi: According to experts, based on the spent shells recovered during the terrorist attack in Reasi, two distinct types of weapons were used. According to Sandeep Unnithan, editor-in-chief of News9Plus, one type of weapon identified is an American-made M4 rifle, as evidenced by empty brass cartridges found at the site. Additionally, shorter cartridges were also discovered among the debris. These cartridges came from the AK-47 assault rifle, measuring 7.62 x 39 mm.

“Two types of weapons were used. One is an American-made M4 type weapon, identified by the empty brass shell, and the other is a shorter cartridge, which is an AK-47 cartridge, measuring 7.62×39. The 7.62 is the diameter of the bullet and 39 is the length,” Unnithan said.

He further noted that many terrorist groups in the Valley are using American-made weapons due to their availability in Afghanistan. When the Americans left Afghanistan in 2021, they left behind vast stockpiles of M4 and M16 assault rifles, as well as ammunition. Millions of rounds of these weapons were left behind by the United States in Afghanistan, he added.

How US-made weapons end up in the hands of terrorists in Kashmir?

Unnithan explained that the American-made weapons left in Afghanistan spread not only to Afghanistan but also to Pakistan and then entered India via Punjab and J&K. “The reason this smaller cartridge is used is because it is a very lightweight, high velocity cartridge. If you want to shoot a sniper weapon, the M4 is an extremely accurate weapon for engaging targets at a range of 500 to 600 yards,” he said.

TRF claims responsibility

The Resistance Front (TRF), a branch of the Pakistan-backed jihadist terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the death of 10 tourists and injured 33 others.
