'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' Actor Ryan Grantham Sentenced to Life for Murder of His Mother

Actor Ryan Grantham, known for his brief role on “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and appearances on “Riverdale,” has been sentenced to life in prison for the shooting death of his mother.

Grantham, 24, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the killing of Barbara Waite, 64, in 2020, while she was playing the piano in their British Columbia home. He will be eligible for parole in 14 years, CBC reported.

Grantham is known for a number of roles during his career, most notably in the 2010 film “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” in which he played a student representing a shrub in a stage adaptation of the “Wizard of Oz.”

He also appeared in “Riverdale” as Jeffery Augustine, a teenager who hits Fred Andrews with his father's truck and kills him.

Grantham confessed to the murder in a GoPro video and showed his mother's body, according to evidence presented in court.

Prosecutors said Grantham left the crime scene with Molotov cocktails and guns in an attempt to kill Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa. He also considered committing a mass shooting before going to police, CBC reported.

Defense lawyer Chris Johnson said the actor, who has been jailed since his arrest, was expecting Judge Kathleen Ker's sentence, CTV reported.

“I think he’s quite worried about the whole thing. He’s a pretty small person, and going into the prison system, I’m sure it’s an intimidating and scary idea for him,” Johnson said.
