DEU seizes $78,500 in illegal drugs during drug trafficking investigation

On June 18, 2024, members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service's Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) were investigating a suspected drug trafficker. During the investigation, detectives observed the individual operating a vehicle while prohibited from driving due to a prior DUI conviction.

Detectives, with the assistance of Patrol Operations, conducted a traffic stop on Elm Street, where the individual was taken into custody.

After searching the individual and the vehicle, officers discovered 216 grams of fentanyl, 85 grams of cocaine, 484 grams of methamphetamine, a digital scale and more than $5,200 in cash. The value of the drugs seized is approximately $78,500.

As a result, Craig Hunda, 42, was charged with the following offenses under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and the Criminal Code of Canada:

  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Driving a motor vehicle while prohibited
  • Violation of probation

The individual was taken into custody overnight and attended bail court today, June 19, 2024, to answer the charges.
