Desperate search for missing Greenport dog: She completed our family

GREENPORT, NY – A 14-year-old Greenport boy and his mother are frantically searching for their missing dog, Violet – who disappeared without a trace on Sunday.

According to Jade Eckardt, Violet is half blue-heeled Australian and half beagle, but she looks “all heels.” Violet is almost a year and a half old, weighs about 35 pounds, and disappeared Sunday from their home on Pipes Neck Road, near Pipes Cove and Drossos Beach, she said.

“She's nervous and shy, so snacks help — but she's a total sweetheart when she's comfortable,” Eckardt said.

Eckardt said she had no idea how Violet disappeared. “We have a fully fenced yard and she's never escaped before. I was at home and she just disappeared,” she said. “I noticed when I went out to look for her. She was just gone with no sign of exit, no door open, no hole dug.”

The loss is unthinkable for Eckardt and his son, 14-year-old Ulu Aipa – both are devastated, tears flowing during their search. Eckardt brought the dog back from upstate for her son last year.

“Violet is everything to me. I’ve wanted a puppy my whole life and my mom finally got one for me right after Christmas last year,” Ulu said.

Friends in Mattituck have Violet's brother, Eckardt added.

For those who might see Violet, Eckardt said, “She's extremely affectionate, but if she doesn't know anyone, she's shy at first.”

Their dog means everything, both say.

“Violet has completed our family. She is so full of love and loves interacting and spending time with us,” Eckardt said.
