Des Moines teen, 16, accused of stabbing brother

A 16-year-old is in custody, accused of killing his brother in a stabbing attack in their apartment.

Mohamed Elzubeir was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder. He is charged as an adult for the stabbing death of his brother, Abdelmagid Elzubeir, 19.

The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment building in the Oakridge neighborhood of downtown Des Moines, according to a news release from police spokesman Sgt. Paul Parizek. Abdelmagid Elzubeir was found with stab wounds and rescue measures were taken on the spot.

He was transported to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center, but later died from his injuries.

Police later said Abdelmagid Elzubeir was stabbed in the neck and claimed it was premeditated.

Mohamed Elzubeir was found near the scene when police arrived, Parizek said. He is being held in a juvenile facility on $1 million cash bail.
