Deputy shoots, kills mentally ill man in Montgomery County

Authorities said Kedrayn Blueford, 21, was reportedly experiencing a manic episode, which was why her family called the sheriff's office.

PORTER, Texas — A man is dead after being shot Friday night by a Montogomery County Sheriff's Office deputy, authorities say.

It happened outside a home on Jordan Pond Ridge in the Highlands subdivision in Porter.

Around 8:20 p.m., deputies responded to a domestic violence incident involving a man armed with a knife. When they arrived on scene, the sheriff's office said the man, identified as Kedrayn Blueford, 21, refused all verbal commands to drop the knife.

Authorities said Blueford had a history of mental health issues and was reportedly experiencing a manic episode, which was why his family called the sheriff's office.

Despite his attempts to deescalate the situation, Blueford allegedly walked toward the deputies with the knife.

The deputy fired his weapon and struck Blueford, who died at the scene.

No deputies were injured.

This shooting is being investigated by the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Homicide and Violent Crime Unit, in conjunction with crime scene investigators, the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office and the Texas Rangers.

Montogomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson released the following statement:

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the person involved in this evening's tragic incident. We are deeply saddened by this loss and understand the immense grief and pain the family is experiencing. Our thoughts are also with to our deputies, who are deeply touched by this unfortunate event.
