Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies were jailed briefly Sunday for an alleged theft from an animal shelter.

A report from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office indicated that around 3:20 a.m. on March 27, an unidentified man and a woman, believed to be 31-year-old Ashley Edwards, allegedly climbed the fence at the adoption center. Saving Grace pets on Old Del Rio Road. The two men then allegedly cut the lock on the kennel containing Edwards' two German shepherds, before leaving with the two dogs on foot towards an unidentified vehicle.

Lt. Brad O'Dell said Edwards abandoned the animals because she was unable to care for them. O'Dell said she was given a number of days to make alternative arrangements for the dogs' care or they would become the property of Saving Grace. The time limit had expired before Edwards burst them.

Sunday Edwards was contacted for an unrelated question. She was questioned about the March incident, admitted to it and was taken into custody.

Edwards was charged with the first two counts of first-degree theft and counts of second-degree burglary, criminal trespass and criminal mischief. Edwards was held without bail.
