The demolition of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland City, Florida, US, has finally begun – more than six years after a mass shooting claimed the lives of 17 students and staff in 2018.

According to the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) district, mechanical demolition of the three-story structure is expected to take several weeks.

He said, “In preparation, crews cleaned and emptied the building, following state and Environmental Protection Agency landfill regulations, and electronic devices were removed for proper handling.

“In addition, survivors of the tragedy, families of the victims, and teachers and staff have had all the items they wanted returned.”

Work on the site, which until recently was to be preserved as evidence for the prosecution of the shooter, is expected to last several weeks.

“This will be a difficult time for the families and friends of those who were killed and injured, as well as the entire community,” BCPS said.

Family members of victims who wish to witness the destruction of the building have been assigned a designated viewing area on school grounds.
