Democratic candidates for Maricopa County sheriff clash over resumes in debate

PHOENIX (AZFamille) — The two candidates for the Democratic nomination for Maricopa County sheriff faced off Tuesday in a televised debate.

It was the last time current Sheriff Russ Skinner and Tyler Kamp would face off before early voting begins next week in the July 30 primary.

It was the kind of debate typical of a primary. There were some disagreements over policy, but the main battle broke out over each other's resumes.

Skinner seeks to remain in office. He was appointed earlier this year following the resignation of Paul Penzone.

During his hour on stage, Skinner touted his decades of experience working at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

But Kamp said Skinner's experience was a problem.

Kamp is a 20-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, and he said Skinner's professional experience includes working under Joe Arpaio.

Under Arpaio's leadership, the sheriff's office engaged in racial profiling.

For this reason, Kamp said the public will never trust Skinner.

Skinner was a lifelong Republican before recently switching to Democrat, making him eligible to run for sheriff after Penzone resigned.
