DeLand man sentenced for murders of ex-wife and son in 2022 – WFTV

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Volusia County man is being sent to prison for the 2022 murders of his ex-wife and adult son.

A Volusia County jury found Michael D. Williams, 49, guilty of two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm after a four-day trial in March.

Volusia County deputies responded to the home Williams still shared with the victims on East Parkway in DeLand just before 8 p.m. on September 18, 2022 after he himself called 911 and said he had shot his ex- woman aged 48 and 28 years old. one year old stepson.

Responding deputies immediately took Williams into custody before finding both victims dead inside the home from multiple gunshot wounds.

According to the sheriff's office, Williams and his wife were in “constant conflict” over domestic issues.

Williams told investigators that the night before the shooting, in particular, he and his ex-wife argued about leaving the lights on in the house and how that would “run up the electric bill.” .

Williams told investigators he came home the next night and a “confrontation” began between him and his ex-wife that escalated until both victims attacked him.

Williams initially claimed he fired his gun in self-defense, but investigators determined his injuries were “not significant.”

Investigators also said Williams also admitted himself that none of the victims were armed with weapons or threatened him.

Williams' arrest report also states that the victim's young children witnessed the shooting.

“The defendant shot and killed a grandmother and father in front of their 5-year-old grandson and 6-year-old granddaughter/daughter,” prosecutor RJ Larizza said of the case after the announcement of the verdict. “It is inconceivable to imagine the suffering and heartache these precious children will endure during their lifetime. No sentence the court can impose will sufficiently punish the defendant for the heartache and damage he has caused.

At a hearing Friday, Judge Randell Rowe III sentenced Williams to two consecutive life terms in the Department of Corrections.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office investigated the case. Assistant State's Attorney Mark Interlicchio is credited with successfully litigating the case on behalf of the State.
