A defendant in a shooting case accepted an extended plea deal from prosecutors in Washington Superior Court Judge Robert Salerno's courtroom June 12.

Alonte Miller, 21, was initially charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon for his involvement in a non-fatal shooting that occurred April 20 in the 3000 block of Stanton Road, SE.

According to the prosecution, Miller struck two female victims in the head with his firearm. The first victim received a laceration to the head and the second victim suffered a swollen face from the blow. The gun went off once, but no one was shot.

During the hearing, defense attorney Stephen LoGerfo alerted Judge Salerno that Miller was accepting a deal that required him to plead guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. In exchange, the government would not seek higher indictments or charges, and would waive any increased charges.

Miller pleaded guilty and waived his rights to DNA testing, indictment and a trial.

Pursuant to the plea agreement, both parties agreed to a maximum sentence of ten years for Miller. Logerfo requested that the parties consider Miller's release because he has a significant leg injury and will need surgery in the near future.

Judge Salerno asked for time to review the request from Logerfo, who also filed a study undertaking under the Youth Rehabilitation Act, which allows flexibility in sentencing young offenders.

The parties will return on August 16 for sentencing.
