CHICAGO — An investigation into a fatal shooting early Wednesday morning that appeared to be the result of road rage has closed the Stony Island Avenue on-ramp to the northbound Bishop Ford Expressway in the South Deering neighborhood on the city's south side.

Illinois State Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds after the shooting near the corner of East 95th Street and Stony Island Ave.

ShotSpotter technology alerted police to the shooting around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Police were focusing their attention on two vehicles at the scene, as well as a tow truck near East 95th Street. There are no further details on the victims at this time.

According to the ISP, before police arrived on scene, the driver of a tow truck stopped to help someone. An altercation and then a shooting ensued.

A witness told WGN News that a brick or object was blocking Stony Island Avenue and a motorist may have suffered damage to their vehicle because of it. The witness believes the person thought the tow truck driver had dropped the brick on Stony Island Avenue, leading to the altercation and shooting.

“He thought the tow trucks had put the brick there, so he got out of his car and started shooting at them,” the witness said. “They started shooting at him and eventually killed him.”

Police did not say whether they had anyone in custody.
