DC-area forecast: Mostly tolerable heat and humidity this week, except for Wednesday

A somewhat subjective rating of the day's weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

7/10: What an improvement. Refreshing breezes bring in much drier, more comfortable air. Temperatures approach 90 rather than 100, with increasing sun and only a small rain chance.

  • Today: Seasonal and breezy. Brief shower? Highs: Mid-80s to near 90s.
  • Tonight: Mostly clear, diminishing breeze. Lows: Mid-60s.
  • Tomorrow: Sunny, not too humid. Highs: Near 90 to mid-90s.

With cautious optimism, the week looks mostly tolerable with more seasonable heat, and some days with lower humidity. The exception is Wednesday, when temperatures make another run well into the 90s to perhaps near 100. A cold front could set off some strong storms Wednesday afternoon or evening, and a few more showers and storms are possible through the weekend, but drought-preventing amounts of rain are questionable.

Today (Monday): Refreshing breezes from the northwest could gust around 25 mph as they gradually bring in drier, more comfortable air. Any early-morning raindrops quickly give way to increasing sunshine. Seasonable temperatures top out in the mid-80s to around 90. Can't rule out a quick afternoon shower or thundershower as a piece of atmospheric energy comes through. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Any shower chance quickly fades after dark. Skies are mainly clear as winds diminish during the evening. Temperatures should bottom out within a few degrees of 65. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): A bit hotter than Monday, with highs near 90 to perhaps a few spots in the mid-90s. But humidity remains fairly comfortable with two points mainly in the 50s, so that's a plus. Wear that sunscreen as sunshine could be virtually uninterrupted. Afternoon breezes from the southwest are a bit more noticeable but stay mainly light. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: A bit of cloud cover is possible at times as the atmosphere moistens due to moderate breezes from the southwest ferrying in slightly higher humidity. We'll also monitor the chance of some pre-dawn rumbles of thunder. Lows are mainly in the low to mid 70s. Trust: Medium

Uncomfortable heat and humidity is resurgent on Wednesday with highs aiming for the mid-90s to near 100 and the heat index potentially peaking near 105. An approaching cold front gives us a pretty good chance for showers and storms during the afternoon or evening, a few of which could turn severe. Remaining warm and muggy Wednesday night with lows in the low to mid 70s. Trust: Medium

Partly sunny and more seasonable again Thursday and Friday with highs in the mid-80s to near 90 and less humidity. Slight shower and storm chances favor Thursday and Thursday night with even lower chances Friday. Trust: Medium

We should trend hotter and more humid again this weekend. Looks like highs near 90 to the mid-90s, though even hotter is possible if skies stay mainly sunny. The potential for a few showers and storms favors Sunday more than Saturday as of now. Confidence: Low-Medium
