Darlene 3 and Long Bend Fire Trail Status

A massive wildfire had charred more than 2,415 acres in central Oregon as of Wednesday morning, a rapid increase from 1,700 acres Tuesday night, authorities said.

The Darlene 3 Fire was 30% contained overnight after prompting the evacuation of nearby residents Tuesday afternoon, the closure of campsites and the state's emergency fire law, according to the commissioner of fires Mariana Ruiz-Temple.

“The Emergency Conflagration Act allows us to send the full might of Oregon’s fire services to protect lives and property,” Ruiz-Temple said in a news release. “This fire has grown rapidly over the past few hours, driven by gusty winds and intense fire conditions.”

The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office released photos and videos of a huge plume of black smoke rising above homes and the forest.

“Leave Now” Evacuation Order in Effect

A Level 3 evacuation order – meaning “leave now” – remains in effect on the east side of the city and east of Highway 97. An evacuation map can be found here. Late Wednesday morning, a Level 1 evacuation (be prepared) was issued for the west side of Highway 97.

“Winds and warm temperatures are expected this afternoon and will challenge established lines,” Central Oregon Fire Information said. “Today’s focus will be on keeping the fire in its current area of operation and reinforcing lines with dozers, hand crews and engines. Aerial resources will continue to fight the fire as needed.”

The Darlene 3 Fire is one of several active wildfires burning across the state.

Ruiz-Temple urged Oregonians to do “everything they can to prevent wildfires” during the hot, dry summer months.

Long Bend fire reaches 60% containment

Firefighters have increased containment to 60 percent of the Long Bend Fire, located about 2 miles southwest of the town of Maupin in Wasco County on the west bank of the Deschutes River. The fire was listed Wednesday at 1,024 acres.

The Wasco County Sheriff's Office has reduced the evacuation advisory to Level 1 – meaning “be prepared” – for much of the affected area.

Additionally, the Deschutes River closure at Harpham Flat Campground in Maupin has been lifted and both campgrounds have reopened.

Major progress made in Upper Applegate firefighting

Progress continued Tuesday to contain the Upper Applegate Fire burning in southern Oregon, south of Jacksonville, which is estimated to have grown to 890 acres. Level 2 evacuation warnings were in effect south of the small town of Ruch in Jackson County.

Firefighters are conducting controlled burns around the edges of the fire to limit its spread to surrounding areas.

“Overnight, crews were able to conduct burning operations on the eastern edge of the fire. These efforts helped bring the edge of the fire closer to the indirect lines established around the fire,” a morning report said. “Cleanup efforts continue along the southern portion of the fire. »

But hours later, authorities wrote that the virus had spread beyond the fire lines, prompting the efforts that followed.
