Indios Fire sees no growth in last 24 hours

Daily update – Tuesday June 4, 2024

Acres: 11,500

Start date: May 19, 2024

Location: 7 miles north of Coyote Village, New Mexico

Staff: 594

Completion: 66%

Fuels: Wood

Highlights: The size of the Indios Fire remains unchanged from yesterday and crews successfully achieved 66% operational objectives. Reduced winds and fire activity have led to reduced smoke impacts on surrounding communities. Due to the successful placement and reinforcement of control lines along the southwest perimeter of the fire, the Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office downgraded the Corrales Ranch area from “settled” to “ready” status yesterday.

Operations: At the northwest edge of the fire perimeter, firefighters continued to move along control lines to identify actions needed to prevent fire spread, suppress spot fires, or extinguish hot spots. Crews monitored the fire area to assess the effects of the fire, observe fire behavior, and evaluate progress toward meeting incident objectives. Fire behavior specialists noted that the fire was currently smoldering and spreading with a weak flame within the fire perimeter. As the fire slowly consumes vegetation in the country's interior, overall fire activity decreases each day. Firefighters conducted mulching operations along the western portion of the fire and then completed work on Forest Road 64. Around the southern edge of the fire, near private property, firefighters mopped up hot spots, secured the handline and patrolled along Forest Road 77. Today, firefighters will continue chipping

vegetation into small wood chips and scattering them to reduce the risk of ignition along roads. As primary fire lines continue to contain the main fire, crews reinforce contingency lines to provide secondary reinforcements in the event the fire advances further.

Weather: Temperatures today will be similar to yesterday. A low pressure system coming from the west is expected to bring high clouds and a slight increase in wind speeds. High temperatures increase Wednesday and Thursday with the hottest temperatures of the year so far. The chance of showers and thunderstorms will increase Thursday through the weekend with the danger of strong outflow gusts near any storm.

Smoke: Smoke continues to impact surrounding communities. Smoke detectors have been installed in Coyote, Gallina, Cañones, Christ in the Desert Monastery and Abiquiu Dam. People sensitive to smoke and people with respiratory problems or heart conditions are encouraged to take precautions. A report on the smoke outlook for

The Indios Fire is available online at the links below. View an interactive smoke map at To learn more about the impacts of smoke at

Closures: The Santa Fe National Forest has issued an emergency area closure for the Indios Fire. The complete closure order (n° 03-12-05-23-22) and the plan are available on Inciweb. Camping and water will be available at the Coyote Ranger Station for Continental Divide Trail hikers affected by this closure.

Security: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the area, which includes

unmanned aircraft or drone systems. For more information on the dangers drones pose to wildfirefighting aircraft and ground personnel, see:
