Dad reaches breaking point after discovering teenage daughter's 'stealing' habits: 'She's taking advantage of it'

A father is angry with his 16-year-old daughter who keeps stealing from her stepmother Barbara.

He took to Reddit's “Am I the A******” forum for help. The father doesn't know how to contact his daughter Molly. She continues to apply makeup to her mother-in-law Barbara without permission. But when she destroyed part of the stepmother's property, the father put his foot down.

Decode and demystify Gen Z's latest online slang terms with the new In The Know glossary.

“I married Barbara, my current wife, two years ago,” the father said. “She and my daughter Molly get along well. They have many interests in common, including makeup. My wife works as a nurse and has experience with which makeup brands she thinks are the best. She buys her own makeup, which I think is expensive compared to Molly's. My wife was not okay with Molly taking her makeup and brushes and damaging them. But I didn't want to say anything out of politeness. It lasted two months. So far, Molly has cost my wife money by replacing the expensive makeup she kept taking without even asking. Of course, I've had many conversations with Molly about this and her argument is always that women can share makeup and what's more, it's family.

The father tried to confront Molly again but she wouldn't listen to him.

“A few days ago my wife told me that Molly took a whole set of makeup and didn't return it, then she told me [Molly] I threw it away when asked about it,” the father wrote. “I was angry with my wife because she said she couldn’t tell Molly how upset she was. I went out and bought my wife a safe and suggested she store her makeup in it and she agreed. I sat down with Molly and told her that she had been punished for what she had done and she gladly accepted the punishment. But she threw a tantrum after I told her I got my wife a safe to keep her makeup in and that I was sad things had to come to this. She said I didn't understand and that it was logical and not weird to use her mother's makeup products. I argued that this was unacceptable. [Molly] I started crying saying I knew she couldn't afford the makeup she used with her mother in law and now I'm forcing her to go back to using cheap makeup that is damaging her skin.

The editors thought the teenager was entitled.

“When she found out OP and her mother-in-law had found a way to stop her from stealing for good, she threw a tantrum. She takes advantage of her mother-in-law,” wrote one user.

“This is definitely not acceptable behavior,” said another.

“At 16 she should know better,” someone commented.
