Cyclist killed after collision with bus in Syracuse identified

Syracuse, New York — A man riding an electric bicycle who died after colliding with a bus Friday evening in Syracuse has been identified.

The man was Rondell Cooks, 40, of Syracuse, police said.

The crash was reported around 6:30 p.m. Friday in Syracuse's South Side, at South Salina Street and West Beard Avenue.

Cooks was heading south on South Salina Street when he collided with a Centro bus traveling north before turning left onto West Beard Avenue, police previously said.

A witness said Cooks was thrown from the bike after the collision with the bus, then run over again, this time by an SUV. A police officer on 911 dispatches also said the man was struck after the bus collided.

Officers were seen at the scene questioning the driver of a gray SUV.

Cooks was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for Centro, the local transit agency, did not respond to requests for comment.

Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to call them at 315-442-5130.
