Crystal Fire: Crews battle blaze that has burned at least 60 acres in St. Helena, CAL FIRE says

ST. HELENA, Calif. (KGO) — Crews responded to a brush fire in North Bay on Wednesday.

CAL FIRE says the Crystal Fire burned near the 200 block of Crystal Springs Road in St. Helena and started around 1:40 p.m.

Shawn Moura was at home in rural Napa County, just a few miles from St. Helena Wednesday afternoon when she smelled smoke.

When she went to look out her window, Moura said she saw a wall of flames heading towards her.

“Just one… oh bad word,” Moura said.

After processing what she was seeing, Moura says she grabbed the dogs she was currently watching, immediately got in her car and went to pick up her parents who live nearby.

“I went up the hill to look for them. I then called the neighbors who live up there, then I stopped at another neighbor's house who I knew was at my house but I don't have their number , just to tell them to get out now,” she said.

Among other difficult conditions, crews battled the fire in the face of outside temperatures above 100 degrees.

Five firefighters required medical attention, three of whom were transported to a nearby hospital.

“Steep terrain, very hot, so a lot of hard work trying to get hoses up to that fire for the firefighters that were on the ground,” CAL FIRE spokesman Jason Clay said.

This is the first major fire to break out in North Bay this season.

Firefighters say they are ready to face a potentially busy summer.

They are urging everyone living in a fire zone to make sure they, too, are prepared.

“Everything is drying out. We started to see in late May, at least in North Bay, that the fire activity was really starting to ramp up,” Clay said.

The cause of this fire remains under investigation.

But Moura says she's just grateful for the quick action.

Stop it from getting even worse.

“I'm so grateful. So grateful. Immediate response. They care and they're here for us. My house is here because they saved it in the Glass Fire, so they did it again.”
