Critical Incident Response Team activated to investigate officer-involved shooting in Craig

The Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff's Office have released information regarding an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Craig man Friday evening.

According to a press release from the Craig Police Department, the incident involved an officer from the Craig Police Department and a deputy from the Moffat County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 9:40 p.m., the Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence at Cedar Mountain Trailer Park, located at 925 W. 1st Street in Craig, for a report of a man with a handgun. Upon arrival at the scene, the officer and his deputy were confronted by a man brandishing a handgun. A police officer-involved shooting has occurred.



Law enforcement provided medical treatment to the man until paramedics arrived on scene. The suspect was transported to hospital where he died of his injuries. According to the press release, no further information is being released at this time.

According to Craig Police, the investigation is in its early stages and preliminary information is subject to change. Members of the 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team will continue to conduct interviews with witnesses and individuals involved in this case over the coming days. Additional details will be disclosed as appropriate, keeping in mind the ongoing investigation.



The agencies involved are responsible for disclosing the names of their officers/deputies involved. As is the case with any officer-involved shooting, the officer and deputy involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. An internal investigation will be carried out independently of the criminal investigation carried out by the CIRT.

This incident remains under investigation by CIRT. All officer-involved shootings in Moffat County are investigated by the 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, comprised of representatives from the Steamboat Police Department, Sheriff's Office from Routt County, Granby Police Department, Fraiser/Winter Park Police Department and Craig Police Department. , the Moffat County Sheriff's Office, the Colorado State Patrol, the 14th Judicial District Attorney's Office and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

CIRT is activated when a law enforcement agency is involved in a critical incident to ensure an independent investigation. As Moffat County Sheriff's Office personnel and Craig Police Department personnel were involved in this incident, the Routt County Sheriff's Office is conducting this investigation on behalf of CIRT.
