Cristiano Ronaldo felt the painful emotions of elite sport after seeing a penalty saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak in Portugal's round of 16 tie against Slovenia at Euro 2024 and was seen in tears at half-time of extra time.

It was a frustrating evening for Ronaldo as the Portugal captain had already sent a free-kick over the crossbar and had his shot pushed away by Oblak before stepping up to take the penalty.

Diogo Jota, who needed to break the deadlock to avoid a penalty shootout, headed towards the penalty area and was fouled by Vanja Drkusic. Ronaldo looked confident but sent his shot low to the keeper's left, as Oblak rushed to deflect the ball off the outside of the post.

Slovenia had earlier forced extra time after drawing 0-0 against a team tipped to win the tournament overall.

The first half of extra time ended immediately after the missed penalty and Ronaldo was seen in tears in the huddle with his teammates as he continued to search for his first goal of the tournament. He has now failed to convert three of the nine penalties he has taken at major international tournaments.

Ronaldo's emotional display was in stark contrast to Oblak's in the Slovenia match, who energetically encouraged his team to keep fighting.

Slovenia were the lowest-ranked team in the competition and took Portugal to a penalty shootout where Ronaldo converted his spot-kick to help his team reach the quarter-finals.
