Crews will work through the night to extinguish the fire at the North Knoxville facility

Fire at Tamko Building Products on June 19, 2024 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Sections of two roads in Knoxville remain closed and firefighters are expected to work through the night after a fire broke out at a building materials company Wednesday.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Tamko Building Products factory at 2506 Johnston Street just after 3 p.m. Smoke and flames could apparently be seen by motorists on nearby I-275.

According to a Knoxville Fire Department spokesperson, the fire was contained to a “cardboard block” near the main building. There was no damage to the building and the Norfolk railway remains open.

The fire is expected to continue to smolder for hours. Crews remain on site and will work most of the night.

New York Avenue at Louisiana Avenue and Johnston Street at Louisiana Avenue will remain closed until the scene is cleared.

City work teams are also on site to help firefighters by moving the piles to be extinguished. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
